Blue Course Green
I

Blue and White Golf Courses
The Pennsylvania State University
University Park, Pennsylvania

Case Description:

Penn State's Blue Course has a green--the infamous #4--that everyone hates to play. Green #4 has an abundance of just about everything one can imagine, including a dense stand of tall trees, some of which are as close as 10 ft from the green, causing moderate shade throughout much of the day, and poor air circulation all of the time. It also has some steeply sloped sand bunkers, one of which comes right up to the collar of the green. And #4 often has standing water, reflecting the poor surface and internal drainage. Green #4 wasn't really "constructed" in the sense that a construction plan was developed or a reasonable design employed; it was just "pushed up" and planted.
