Greens: Seeded to Pennlinks creeping bentgrass. Scotts Pro-Turf fertilizer (19-26-5) was applied at initial seeding at a rate sufficient to provide 5.4 lb N, 7.4 lb P and 1.4 lb K per Kft2 along with 15-0-30 for an additional 1 lb N and 2 lb K per Kft2. Beginning two weeks after seeding, 19-26-5 was applied at a rate sufficient to provide 1 lb N, 1.4 lb P and 0.25 lb K per Kft2 per week for the next eight weeks. At the end of 10 weeks, total nutrients provided through fertilization were: 12.74 lb N, 16.27 lb P, and 5.04 lb K per Kft2. Three weeks after seeding, the greens were mowed at 3/8ths inch and topdressed with ¼ inch of sand. In successive weeks, the greens were mowed at 3/16 inch (4th week), 11/64 inch (5th week), 5/32 inch (6th week), 9/64 inch (7th week), and 1/8 inch (8th week), then maintained at 1/8 inch afterwards. Topdressing was applied at 1/4 inch in the 3rd week, 1/8 inch in the 4th and 5th weeks, and 1/16 inch per week afterwards. Subdue granular fungicide was applied at 25 oz/Kft2 at seeding prior to initial watering. A second application was made 2-3 weeks later and watering was reduced to firm the soil. At 4-5 weeks following seeding, a broad-spectrum disease control was initiated using alternating applications of contact and systemic fungicides every two weeks.Tees: Seeded to Penncross creeping bentgrass. The grow-in fertilization program for tees was identical to that of the greens. Mowing was initiated during the 3rd week at 3/8 inch, then was reduced to 11/32 inch (4th week), 11/64 inch (5th week), 5/16 inch (6ths & 7th week), 9/32 inch (8th & 9th week), and 1/4 inch (10th week), then maintained at 1/4 inch afterwards. Topdressing was applied at 1/4 inch in the 3rd week, 1/8 inch in the 4th and 5th weeks, and 1/16 inch per week afterwards. Fungicide applications were identical to those made for greens.
Fairways: Seeded to a blend of creeping bentgrasses (Penncross, Pennlinks, and Penneagle). Beginning two weeks after seeding, 19-26-5 was applied at a rate sufficient to provide 1 lb N, 1.4 lb P and 0.25 lb K per Kft2 every second week up to 11 weeks. Beginning three weeks after seeding, 15-0-30 was applied at a rate sufficient to provide 1 lb N and 2 lb K per Kft2 every second week up to 12 weeks. At the end of 12 weeks, total nutrients provided through fertilization were: 16.4 lb N, 14.4 lb P, and 14.7 lb K per Kft2. Mowing was initiated during the 3rd week at 7/8 inch, then reduced to 3/4 inch in the 5th week, 5/8 inch in the 7th week, ½ inch in the 9th week, 7/16 inch in the 11th week, and 3/8 inch in the 12th week, then maintained at 3/8 inch afterwards. Fungicide applications were identical to those made for greens.
Roughs: Seeded to a mixture of Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fine fescue. The fertilization program was identical to that for the fairways for the first 10 weeks. At the end of 10 weeks, total nutrients provided through fertilization were: 16.4 lb N, 14.4 lb P, and 14.7 lb K per Kft2. Mowing was initiated during the 4th week at 2.5 inches, then reduced to 2.25 inches during the 6th week, and to 2 inches during the 8th week, then maintained at 2 inches afterwards. No fungicides were applied.
