Topsoil

Nearly three quarters of the site had been farmed for many years prior to its purchase by Mr. McConnell; corn and soybeans were the principal crops grown. The soil map shows the predominent soil type to be Bennington silt loam; however, small fingers of Alexandria silt loam, Cardington silt loam, Candit silt loam and Pewoma silty clay loam are present as well. Physical analysis of a representative topsoil sample from fairway #13, however, indicated a sandy loam texture with generally favorable soil physical properties. Chemical analyses of representative soil samples from each fairway site showed most soils to be moderately acidic and low in P, K and several other nutrients. The proposed greens mixture for the USGA greens is scheduled to be composed of 85 percent sand and 15 percent Canadian Sphagnum peat moss mixed off site. The proposed sand for this mixture is made up of predominently coarse (21%), medium (50%) and fine (20%) sands with 7% very fine or smaller particles and less than 3% very coarse or coarser particles.
