It is the normal practice of the club to topdress all greens with pure dry sand that has less than 5 % material finer than 250 µm and less than 10 % between 500 µm and 1000 µm. For some reason it was decided to topdress the new practice putting green with sand that was much finer in texture than the normal topdressing sand or the sand used for construction. The fertilization programs for the years 2000, 2001, and 2002 provided totals of 245, 306, and 281 kg nitrogen per hectare, respectively. The top 2-cm layer of sand in the green now has 4.5 % organic-matter content. The influence of the accumulated organic matter is evident in the plug extracted from the green..
