Cultural Program for Greens

Mowing: The greens at Kingsbarns are mowed at 6 mm with walk-behind mowers or 5.5 mm with triplex mowers. At maximum yield, a total of 6 boxes of clippings are typically collected from 18 greens. At 6 mm, green speeds typically range from 9.0 to 9.5 ft. The fastest green speeds occur early or late in the season when growth is very slow, or during the growing season under cloudy, moist conditions when the grass tends to "lay down;" slower speeds occur during bright, dry conditions when the grass shoots assume a more-upright growth.

Irrigation: During dry weather, greens are irrigated 5 nights per week for 4 minutes each. The automatic irrigation system provides a precipitation rate of 0.5 inch of water per hour.

Topdressing: Greens are topdressed with 1 ton of sand four times per year, from May to September.

Cultivation: As there is essentially no thatch, vertical mowing is not performed. Solid-tine cultivation is performed monthly using 8-mm tines to a depth of 3.5 to 4 inches on 2- by 2-inch spacing. Water-injection cultivation is also performed monthly. The greens are verti-drained with ½-inch solid tines to a depth of 10 inches in early December, with the holes left open.

Rolling: Greens are rolled with a walk-behind mower for 2 to 3 weeks to "tighten the holes" from verti-draining the previous fall before opening the golf course on April 1st.
