Mowing: Greens are mowed daily during the growing season at 4.5 to 5.0 mm, except for tournament preparation when the height is reduced to 4 mm. During the winter, the mowing frequency is reduced to every other day.
Irrigation: During the summer months, a minimum of 40 mm per week is applied. This is reduced during the winter season to 20 mm per week. Hydrophobic spots are hand watered throughout the year.
Fertilization: A soil analysis was performed in 1993 showing low levels of magnesium, potassium, and, on some greens, calcium, but high levels of phosphorus. Corrective applications of magnesium, potassium and calcium nitrates were incorporated into the fertilization program.
Weed Control: Hand weeding is carried out throughout the growing season.
Disease Control: As the most common disease problems are dollar spot and Microdocium patch, preventive fungicides (principally chlorothalonil) are applied every three weeks from August through May.
Insect Control: Insect infestation does not often occur, but chlorpyrfos is aplied every three weeks as a preventive measure.
Cultivation: All greens are hollowtined (HTC) in September to relieve compaction, improve wetting of hydrophobic spots, stimulate growth, and minimize layering and thatch. This is supplemented with hydrotining (WIC) every three weeks from August to May. Light verticutting is regularly performed to control grain and reduce thatch accumulations.
Topdressing: Greens are topdressed after hollowtining to level the surface and fill in the core holes. An additional light topdressing is performed every two to three weeks to control thatch. Rolling: Rollers are fitted to the triplex mowers to improve putting speeds.
