Modderfontein Modderfontein Golf Club Modderfontein, South Africa |
Chris Madgwick watched the consultant's reaction to the foul odor emanating from the turf sample extracted from #9 green. Chris was well aware of the "black layer" problem; now others, including Frank Fisher, his green committee chairman, were as well. Since accepting the position of superintendent at Modderfontein in 1993, Chris tried to secure additional funding for the golf course. When ownership of the course was transferred from AECI Ltd. to the Modderfontein Town Council, Chris had hoped that this would soon result in the provision of additional resources for addressing the many problems evident in the greens and elsewhere. In his first five years at Modderfontein, however, he had been asked to get by with less, not more, resources. Now, with a turfgrass consultant from the United States pointing out what would be needed to improve the appearance and playability of the greens, the prospects for new resources began to look good.
