Oak Hill: Case Materials

Soil Profile

A mechanical analysis of soil samples extracted from the green revealed that clay comprised nearly half of the medium supporting turfgrass growth; the remainder was approximately one-fifth silt and one-third sand. A core, (as seen below), taken with a soil probe revealed that, with the exception of the surface two inches contributed by topdressing over several years, the underlying soil is severely compacted and affords little internal drainage. With the exception of a small area at the rear, the green is flat with little or no surface drainage.
