Reconstruction of the Field
The PAT (Prescription Athletic Turf) system was selected as city officials believed this was the best system for resisting soil compaction, ensuring adequate drainage and maintaining satisfactory turf quality. Construction began in the spring of 1991 and the playing field was ready for sodding in July. Tuesday, July 9th, was selected as the planting date. Washed (soilless) sod was obtained from a local supplier and delivered by mid-morning. Temperatures were unusually high that day, reaching 106F within the stadium by early afternoon. Workers complained about the uncomfortable working conditions and took many breaks to cool off. There was much confusion about who was responsible for what and sod rolls sat on pallets for extended periods in the hot sun. Installation was not completed until late Wednesday afternoon. Watering was delayed until all sod pieces were laid and some desiccation was evident on pieces laid the first day. Despite frequent watering of the sod during the ensuing weeks, little rooting was evident.
