Dr. Watson's Recommendation
Jim flew to Chicago the next day to examine the playing field. After considering a number of options, he recommended that they employ a "temporary measure" to get through the 1991 playing season; specifically, he recommended replacing the soilless sod with new sod cut thick enough (at least three inches) to stay in place under football play despite the lack of rooting into the underlying soil. He was careful to point out that this was only a temporary solution, and that, next spring, the thick sod should be replaced with washed sod to avoid problems associated with layering within the soil profile.
