York Tournament

Country Club of York
York, Pennsylvania

Case Description:

Preparing for a USGA tournament is a long-term process that involves many challenges for a golf course superintendent. Terry Wueschinski, superintendent at the Country Club of York, was preparing for the biggest golf tournament the City of York had ever seen. The USGA visited the Club in the summer of 1995. Prior to this visit, three hundred trees removed from the course. This required two years and $65,000 to accomplish. The removal of the trees was an influential factor that convinced the USGA to give the club the privilege of hosting the 1998 Junior Amateur Tournament. After the club had received news that it had been selected to host the tournament, representatives of the USGA began talking to Terry about structural changes to the golf course and changes to Terry's cultural program.
