Lesson 01: A Campus Walk

Situation:

While walking across the campus of your state university, you notice how dissimilar the turfs are at various locations. Some turfs are very uniform in appearance while others are distinguished by prominent clumps and patches of grass that differ in their appearance from the grasses immediately surrounding them. As you continue your journey, you notice that some areas are so severely damaged from traffic that bare soil is exposed around the grass and weed plants populating these sites. In those areas that have recently been vegetatively replanted, the individual sod sections contrast sharply with the surrounding turf. Also, some especially worn areas have been roped off; presumably, this was done to restrict traffic and allow these areas to recover. Behind the fence surrounding the president's home, you notice that the lawn has the appearance of a dark-green, lush carpet. While this turf obviously receives less traffic, its substantially higher quality also suggests that it receives more care than many of the other sites you've observed. At the edge of the campus, the university golf course include turfs that differ widely in appearance and playability. When a golf ball is placed on top of greens, the entire ball appears to rest on the surface; on the higher-cut fairways, however, much of the lower portion of the ball is hidden.

As you reflect on your observations, consider the following questions:

What to do...

In this lesson you will review information on Turf Management and Turf Quality. Throughout this lesson you will be prompted to do self-checks. If are able to answer all the questions in the self check correctly, you will have the option to skip over some of the material presented in this lesson, of course you can review everything if you want.

When you are finished going through the lesson, access the Lesson 01 Quiz. You can take the quiz up to 5 times. Practice! The questions are just like those you will find on the exams.
