Lesson 05: An Atmosphere for Change

Situation

If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute and it'll change! While this statement does overstate the dynamic nature of the weather, one can, in fact, experience dramatic changes just by walking short distances: from a sunny field to the protective shade of a tree, from the side of a building exposed to the wind to a protected side, or from a concrete surface to one dense with vegetation. The proximity of large (and not-so-large) bodies of water can also influence the weather. And the weather in the city is different from that in the country.

During a recent trip to visit turfgrass sites in the Chicago area, you divided your time among four locations: the Village of Waukeegan along the north shore of Lake Michigan (with average monthly temperatures for July and January are 71.9 and 22.5 F, respectively), the Village of Marengo located 40 miles inland from Waukeeegan (72.7 and 20.5), the City of Chicago (74.7 and 24.3), and the Village of Argonne located 30 miles west of Chicago (72.9 and 22.2). Conversations with turfgrass managers at each of these sites suggested that the measurable differences in atmospheric conditions significantly influenced their cultural operations.

As you reflect on these observations, consider the following questions:

What to do...

In this lesson you will review information on Climatology. Throughout this lesson you will be prompted to do self-checks. If are able to answer all the questions in the self check correctly, you will have the option to skip over some of the material presented in this lesson, of course you can review everything if you want.

When you are finished going through the lesson, access the Lesson 05 Quiz. You can take the quiz up to 5 times. Practice! The questions are just like those you will find on the exams.
