Lesson 07: Making a New Turf

Situation

"Sometimes, you just have to start over." After considering all of the alternatives, this is what you'd finally concluded after surveying the site for the third time. There are simply too many things wrong: the different textural layers in the soil profile, the perennial weeds that can't be controlled with selective herbicides, and the unsightly depressions that collect standing water after each rain.

It's late June in southeastern Pennsylvania and the weather is fine, but hot weather is just around the corner. There is much to be done before planting, and there are so many things that have to be done properly during and after the planting operation. You know that if seeding is the planting method selected, it should be delayed until favorable weather for germination and seedling establishment is more likely. You've decided that your first step is to develop a plan. As you develop your plan, consider the following questions:

• What should be done to control the weeds?
• How should the soil problem be addressed?
• How should a smooth, uniform surface that gently slopes away from the building be developed?
• What should be planted (and how) to produce a residential lawn of outstanding quality?
• And what steps should be taken after planting to ensure that the new turf is successfully established?
