Lesson 09: Water, Water Everywhere
The lake separating fairways #2 and #3 is an enormously attractive feature. While it has been the recipient of many errant golf balls, its contribution to the aesthetic experience of the game far outweighs any hazards it might pose. But its function is more than aesthetic; it is vital to effective water management. The lake not only receives drainage water from most of the 125 acres comprising the golf course, it also serves as the primary supply of irrigation water. Even during dry years, the lake's capacity is usually sufficient to sustain the course's irrigation needs. Only once in the past ten years was it necessary to purchase water from the local authority. Today, the concern is not too little water, it's too much. Increasing compaction in the fairways has reduced infiltration rates to below the rate at which water is applied by the irrigation system. As a consequence, the excess irrigation water moves downslope in vast sheets and accumulates in depressions throughout entire the golf course.
As you reflect on these conditions, consider the following questions:
What to do...
In this lesson you will review information on Irrigation and Irrigation Systems. Throughout this lesson you will be prompted to do self-checks. If are able to answer all the questions in the self check correctly, you will have the option to skip over some of the material presented in this lesson, of course you can review everything if you want.
When you are finished going through the lesson, access the Lesson 09 Quiz. You can take the quiz up to 5 times. Practice! The questions are just like those you will find on the exams.
