Lesson 13: Better Watch Those Pesticides


Situation

The activity seemed so simple and non-threatening. A man spraying weeds, insects, or whatever it was that had invaded his lawn. A simple hand-held sprayer with no more than two gallons of spray capacity. What harm could it do, even if some of the spray droplets drifted in the wind? But as you thought about it, you wondered: What was he spraying? Was the pesticide he selected the proper choice for the particular pest or conditions? Would there be any toxicity from residues remaining on the foliage or in the soil? Was he applying the pesticide at the recommended rate and in accordance with label instructions? And what effect would the drifting spray particles have on the neighbor's flowers, trees, pets, or, for that matter, the children playing only a few feet away?
