Lesson 23: Exploring the Bents
Western Oregon in June was even more beautiful than you imagined it would be. With its mild, wet winters and cool, dry summers, the diversity of vegetation across the rolling landscape was incredible. And the newly constructed Oregon Golf Club was one of the most outstanding golf courses you'd ever seen. Pennlinks creeping bentgrass greens, Penncross creeping bentgrass tees, and Bardot colonial bentgrass fairways. Where had you ever seen such spectacular bentgrass before? Perhaps in Rhodes Island where velvet bentgrass can be found in more than just little patches on old greens. Of course, bentgrasses occur all over the world and, depending on the quality of their management, they can be spectacular in appearance and performance. Even redtop, a little-used bentgrass species today, can persist on wet, poorly drained, trafficked sites where no other turfgrass will.
