Lesson 25: Exploring the Panicoids

Situation

As one explores the southernmost portion of the United States where the climate is mostly warm-subtropical-humid to the east, arid or semiarid to the west, and subtropical-dry summer on the west coast, the panicoid turfgrasses are used, along with the eragrostoids, for sports, lawn and utility turfs. St. Augustinegrass is a widely used lawn grass that does well in both sunny and shaded environments; it's frequently planted adjacent to bermudagrass (an eragrostoid) due to the latter's poor shade tolerance. Bahiagrass and centipedegrass are used primarily in the more-humid southeast in lawn and utility turfs. Kikuyugrass can be found in some sports and lawn turfs at scattered locations in the less-humid areas. Finally, seashore paspalum currently has limited use on saline soils for golf greens and other intensively cultured turfs because of its high salt tolerance.

As you explore the uses of these turfgrasses, consider the following questions:

The purpose of this lesson to to review the following turfgrasses:

As you review the turfgrasses above, be aware that the information will appear in a second window (as you have seen with some material in earlier lessons). Use the links to review the characteristics of each grass. Close the window to return to this page...

When you are finished going through the lesson, access the Lesson 25 Quiz. You can take the quiz up to 5 times. Practice! The questions are just like those you will find on the exams.
